consider와 desire는 '별'을 뜻하는 라틴어가 어원 | 책읽다 단어 이야기 발견하다

나는 라틴어를 공부하면서 영어 단어의 60퍼센트가 라틴어에서 온 것임을 알게 되었다. 가령 '고려하다'는 영어 단어 consider는 sidus(별: 영화 제작사의 이름이기도 하다)라는 라틴어에서 온 것이다. com+sidus라는 합성어에서 나온 것으로서, "별 점을 치면서 문제를 숙고하다."라는 뜻을 갖고 있다. '욕망하다'의 desire는 라틴어 desiderare(de+sidero)에서 온 것인데 "별로부터 시선을 돌리다."는 뜻이다. 별 점을 보지 않으니 세상일이 어떻게 돌아가는지 궁금해지고 그래서 알려고 욕망하게 되는 것이다. 이렇게 어원을 알고 있으면 어떤 단어든 예사롭게 보이지 않는다.

If your horoscope today warns of disaster, it might at least claim etymological correctness: the original sense of disaster was "an unfavorable aspect of a planet or star." This illustrates the idea that such events guide our destinies, as the ancients believed: the -aster you see on the end of this word shows up in a number of English words, variously transformed, such as astronomy, aster, star, and astral.
