The root word phil comes from a Greek verb meaning to love. So, if your name is Philip, you are etymologically a ‘lover of horses!’ The city of Philadelphia is the city of ‘brotherly love.’ A philosopher is a ‘lover of wisdom;’ you will probably recognize the soph in the word philosopher—it means ‘wise.’ A philodendron is a type of plant that ‘loves trees’ because it curls up(동그랗게 말리다/말다) or twines(휘감다) around them as it climbs.

그리스어에 동사에서 나온 어근 'phil'은 'to love(사랑하다)'를 의미한다. 따라서 당신의 이름이 'Philip'이면 어원학적으로는 'lover of horses(말을 사랑하는 사람)'이 된다. 미국의 도시 'Philadelphia(필라델피아)'의 별칭은 'brotherly love(형제애)'이다. Hemophiliacs are etymologically ‘lovers of blood.’ This does not mean that hemophiliacs are vampires, but rather that they ‘love blood’ because their platelets are ineffective at clotting wounds; they therefore lose a lot of blood when wounded, causing them to need more, hence ‘loving,’ and needing, extra.

'Hemophiliacs(혈우병 환자)' 어원으로 풀면 'lovers of blood(피는 사랑하는 사람)'이다. 그렇다고 해서 혈우병 환자가 '흡혈귀(vampire)'라는 말은 아니다. 상처가 났을 때  그들의 혈액에 있는 '혈소판(platelet)'에서 피를 제대로 응고시키지 못해 빠져나간 '피를 보충해야(love blood)' 때문이다. 피가 다량으로 빠져나가면 혈우병 환자는 피가 더 필요하다. 그래서 그것을 '좋아한다(loving)'고 표현한 것이다. 더 많은 피가 필요한 것이다.

A philanthropist is etymologically a ‘lover of humans,’ that is, someone who is charitable to and does good deeds for the good of humankind as a whole. A lesser known word is philogynist, a ‘lover of women,’ that is, of all things related to the well-being of women in general (the gyn gives rise to gynecology as well).

'philanthropist(박애주의자, 자선가)'는 어원으로 풀면 'lover of humans(인간을 사랑하는 사람)'이다. 다시 말해서 인류 공동의 선을 위해 자비나 선행을 베푸는 사람을 일컫는다. 덜 알려진 단어로 'lover of women(여자를 좋아하는 사람)'을 뜻하는 'philogynist'가 있다. 그들의 관심사는 일반적으로 여성의 안녕이나 복지와 관련되어 있다. ('gyn'은 '여성'을 뜻한다. 여기서 '부인과 의학'을 뜻하는 'gynecology'가 파생되었다.)

A philologist is a scholar of language who ‘loves words;’ your soft contact lenses are probably hydrophilic because they ‘love water,’ and a bibliophile ‘loves books’!

'philologist(언어학자, 문헌학자)'는 '말을 사랑하는(love words)' 언어학자를 뜻한다. '물을 좋아해는 또는 물을 잘 흡수하는(love water)' 소프트콘택트렌즈는 'hydrophilic'이다.(hydro-는 '물의'라는 뜻이다.) '책을 좋아하는(love books)' 사람을 뜻하는 '애서가'는 'bibliophile'이다.
