How to tell the time in English

It’s one o’clock 지금은 1시이다.

It’s one minute past one. 지금은 1시 1분이다.

It’s three minutes past one. 지금은 1시 3분이다.

It’s five past one. 지금은 1시 5분이다.

It’s ten past one. 지금은 1시 10분이다.

It’s fifteen minutes past one or (a) quarter past one.지금은 1시 15분이다.

 

 

It’s twenty past one.

지금은 1시 20분이다.

It’s twenty five past one.

지금은 1시 25분이다.

It’s half past one.

지금은 1시 30분이다.

It’s twenty five to two.

지금은 2시 25분 전이다(1시 35분).

It’s twenty to two.

지금은 2시 20분 전(1시 40분)이다.

It’s seventeen minutes to two.

지금은 2시 17분 전(1시 43분)이다.

It’s fifteen minutes to two or It’s (a) quarter to two.

시간 말하기(Saying the time)

When we talk about time on a clock, we have analogue and digital clocks – analogue clocks with hands and digital clocks with numbers. We use either the 12-hour clock or the 24-hour clock.

우리는 시간을 말할 때 아날로그 시계와 디지털 시계를 보고 말합니다. 아날로그 시계는 초침이 있고 디지털 시계는 숫자가 있죠. 12시간 또는 24시간으로 시간을 말합니다.

The 12-hour clock uses ‘am’ – Ante Meridiem and ‘pm’ – Post Meridian (after noon) to distinguish the difference between day and night. For more details click here.

The 24-hour clock is used for timetables

10 o’clock in morning can also be expressed as 10am or 10:00
 and 10 o’clock at night can also be expressed as 10pm or 22:00

1 o’clock in the morning – 1am or 01:00
 and 1 o’clock in the afternoon 1pm or 13:00

12시간 체계로 시간을 말할 때 오전은 시간 앞에 'am(Ante Meridiem)'을, 오후는 'pm(Post Meridian)'을 붙여 낮과 밤 사이 시간을 구분합니다.

24시간 체계는 시간표에 사용됩니다.

오전 10시는 '10am' 또는 '10:00'으로 표시할 수 있습니다.

밤 10시는 '10pm' 또는 '22:00'으로 표시할 수 있습니다.

새벽 1시는 '1am' 또는 '01:00'으로 표시할 수 있습니다.

오후 1시는 '1pm' 또는 '13:00'으로 표시할 수 있습니다.

 오전 6시 06:00 – 6am – It’s six o’clock (in the morning).
 오전 7시 07:00 – 7am – It’s seven o’clock (in the morning).

 오전 9시 09:00 – 9am – It’s nine o’clock (in the morning).

We only use o’clock for the hours (on the dot).

정각을 말할 때는 'o'clock'이라고만 말한다.

For times outside the hour and five-minute intervals, we say minutes past or minutes to:

정각을 벗어나 분 단위로 시간을 말할 때 '(~시 지나past) ~분' 또는  '(~시 되기 전to) ~분' 이라고 말한다.
